Like the Big Red Ship sampler before it, this sampler was inspired by the antique Indonesian woven cloths called Tampan or shipcloths. It features a central elephant-bearing ship surrounded by a rich panoply of plants, birds, and animals, some identifiable and some perhaps more fantastical. Although it is roughly half the size of the original Big Red Ship, it is still quite large at 299 by 269 stitches. This Red Ship of Life was worked on hand-dyed linen with two shades of silk.
