Melody

One of eight new thaumatrope (pronounced thaw-muh-trohp) designs Calico Crossroads is releasing over the next few months. A thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in Victorian times. It consists of a disk or card with a picture on each side that is attached to string. When the string is twirled quickly, the two pictures appear as one. Retail $10.00.

Condolences Cliff Olson

 
Clifford Olson died on Saturday February 21, 2009 at his home in the Town of Dunn at the age of 66.  We wish to send out condolences to his wife, Donna Olson (Satin Stitches), their children and grandchildren. 

I always enjoyed speaking with Cliff at needlework trade shows, especially about our common alma mater, Iowa State University. Clif received his PhD in physics in 1970 from Iowa State University in Ames.  He worked in solid state physics research for Ames Lab throughout his career. He was awarded the Professional and Scientific Excellence Award in 1996 from Iowa State University.  Cliff's obituary can be seen here.

Acorn Thread Holder

This lovely piece was stitched to hold a mother of pearl thread winder, acorn thread holder and a pair of tiny scissors. The ‘toys’ are held into place with double sided silk ribbon. The edges are ruched with the same double sided silk ribbon. The piece was stitched with The Gentle Art Threads on 32ct linen. Finishing instructions are included with the chart.
